All my life I wanted to write a novel. I started at least 30 of them without ever finishing them. People kept saying to me to start with short stories. But I constantly refused : what I really desired was a novel.
Turns out, they were right. When I told a friend I hadn’t finished any literary project yet, he bluntly said it was due to a lack of discipline. Furious, I tried to prove him wrong by completing a short story for the first time. When I showed it to him, he laughed : “See? I was right.”
Maybe it wasn’t a question of discipline, but more a question of technic. To know how to write a story from its beginning to its very end in a novel, you must have experienced it more than once, by writing short stories.
You can see short stories as mini-novels or even as a summary of your novel. If you haven’t yet finished a big story project, I suggest you start by writing it short.
Since I began writing short stories, it has been easier and easier to finish them. And I even wrapped up the first draft of my novel after that!
By completing short stories, you also familiarize yourself with the correction, the rewriting. You can now receive feedback from your friends and even publish in a literary magazine! And who knows? Maybe you can assemble these short stories in a book and send your manuscript to a publisher for the first time!
